The rail link connecting the North West and North East of England is set for a major upgrade thanks to a programme of enhancements to stations and lines across the Pennines.

The £2.9bn scheme is to be undertaken by an alliance between engineering firm BAM Nuttall and consultancies Amey and Arup. Network Rail’s plans include electrification of the line between Manchester and York plus upgrades and restorations of the stations along the line.

The aims of the project are to deliver a more reliable service to rail users, allowing more trains to use the line, and cutting journey times. Part of the proposed plan will see a restoration of the four-track alignment near Dewsbury, plus significant work to improve stations at Huddersfield, Deighton, Mirfield and Ravensthorpe.

At present Network Rail is undertaking a consultation on the proposals, with a first phase finishing in October before opening the next phase in spring 2020.
