Restart a Heart (RSAH) is an annual initiative led by Resuscitation Council UK, aimed at increasing the survival rates of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. This global event, held every October, brings together partners worldwide to raise public awareness about cardiac arrests and increase the number of people trained in life-saving CPR and defibrillation.

  • Less than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Learning CPR and how to use a defibrillator gives someone their best chance of survival.
  • Every second counts in a cardiac arrest. Immediate action is crucial for survival.
  • Anyone can be affected by sudden cardiac arrest at any time. Being ResusReady ensures you can help save a life at home, at work, or in public.
  • Each year, approximately 100,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK – that's around 250 people every day.
  • 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home.
  • Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by 10%.
  • Only 11% of people surveyed said they felt totally confident about using a defibrillator correctly.
  • 15% of people surveyed think only trained medical professionals are allowed to use a defibrillator.

Millbank's Commitment: Our Zoll AED Plus

At Millbank, we're proud to be taking proactive steps to ensure the cardiac safety of our staff and visitors. We've invested in a Zoll AED Plus (Automated External Defibrillator), a critical tool that can mean the difference between life and death in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.

We understand that having an AED is just the first step. As we approach the 5-year mark since acquiring our AED, we're currently replacing the batteries and pads to ensure it remains in optimal condition. We've implemented a rigorous maintenance schedule:

  1. 1Monthly checks: Designated staff members perform monthly inspections.
  2. 5-year replacements: We replace critical components like batteries and pads every five years, adhering to manufacturer guidelines.

What is an AED?

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a life-saving device that can help someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. They are easy to use, portable, and come with clear step-by-step instructions, allowing anyone to use them effectively.

**Important**: You don't need to be trained to use a defibrillator. Watch this instructional video to learn more:

In addition to our AED, we have at least two trained first aiders on site at all times, ready to respond swiftly to any medical emergencies.

We've registered our AED on The Circuit – the national defibrillator network. This connects our device directly to ambulance services, potentially saving precious time in emergencies.

Having an AED in the workplace is a potentially life-saving decision:

  1. Quick response time: In cardiac arrests, every second counts.
  2. Easy to use: Modern AEDs are designed to be user-friendly.
  3. Improved survival rates: AED use significantly increases chances of survival.

We encourage all businesses and organisations to consider investing in an AED and providing first aid training to their staff. Together, we can create safer workplaces and communities, ready to respond when every second counts.

Remember, you don't need to be a medical professional to use an AED or perform CPR. By learning these skills, you could be the one to save a life. Let's work together to make every day a potential Restart a Heart Day.
