A £22m, 25,000 square foot nuclear fusion research facility is set to open at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire next year, it has been announced.

The project is a joint venture between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC).

The £22m development is to be funded by the government’s Nuclear Sector Deal, with additional funding from Sheffield City Region’s Local Growth Fund.

The purpose of the research facility is to ensure the UK wins contracts on the ITER nuclear fusion project in France, which is building momentum in the potentially important and lucrative nuclear fusion industry.

Nuclear fusion technology promises cheap, sustainable and safe energy once the technology is perfected.
