INEOS Automotive will produce its new 4x4, the Grenadier, at a 250,000 square foot site in Bridgend, Wales, it has been confirmed.
The move, backed by Welsh and UK government funding, will create 200 jobs when production begins in 2021, rising to 500 in the long term. INEOS plan to produce 25,000 cars there each year at its peak.
It’s welcome news to the automotive industry in Wales as the Ford plant in Bridgend is set to shut in 2020.
INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe said in a statement, "The decision to build in the UK is a significant expression of confidence in British manufacturing."
INEOS and Ratcliffe have invested £600m into Projekt Grenadier, which was inspired by a desire to recreate the classic Land Rover Defender.
With Aston Martin opening their St Athan plant to produce the DBX SUV, and now the INEOS Automotive Grenadier being produced in Bridgend, it’s an exciting time for automotive manufacturing in the UK and in South Wales.
