The latest report from EDF sheds light on the valuable impact the Hinkley Point C project has had on youth skills and regional growth. According to the Hinkley Point C Socio-Economic Impact Report 2024, this nuclear power endeavour in the UK has not only provided training to 8000 individuals at specialised centres but has also spurred a remarkable 25% surge in younger adults residing in the vicinity.
Among the notable statistics outlined in the report, 1320 apprentices have received training across various fields like project management, accountancy, and hospitality. Furthermore, productivity in Bridgwater, a neighbouring town, has seen a commendable 10% increase compared to surrounding areas.
The report underscores the significant role played by the Centre’s of Excellence, where 7885 individuals have already honed their skills in welding, mechanical, electrical, and construction disciplines, with an additional 1307 currently undergoing training. With a grand vision to train 30,000 individuals over its lifetime, these centres are poised to leave a lasting impact on Somerset’s economy, fostering a more skilled and competitive workforce.
Notably, the influx of adults aged 25-39 into the area marks a significant reversal of the outward migration trend among young people, as highlighted by Hinkley Point C Managing Director Stuart Crooks. He emphasises the project's enduring commitment to the region and its profound social impact, echoing a sentiment shared by many invested in the project's success.
The report also underscores the project's broader economic implications, with 3800 British companies engaged in the supply chain, resulting in a substantial GBP7.3 billion expenditure with regionally-based businesses by the project's completion.
Tom Greatrex, CEO of the UK's Nuclear Industry Association, lauds these findings and emphasises the need for governmental support to replicate similar successes at projects like Sizewell C. He envisions a robust program of new nuclear plants, both large and small, to foster transformative opportunities across the nation.
Despite initial delays and cost revisions, the construction of Hinkley Point C remains a monumental endeavour. Comprising two EPR reactors, this project, once operational, is poised to power 6 million homes for at least six decades, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the UK's energy landscape.
