Geotechnical work for Hinkley Point C has won this year’s British Geotechnical Association Fleming Award.
At the ceremony, Bam Ritchies, NNB (EDF Energy), Aecom and Kier Bam JV were named the winners by a panel of judges headed up by Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions director Yvonne Ainsworth.
Hinkley Point C is the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK in a generation. Winning this award has demonstrated the high level of collaboration between different parties to come up with innovative practical solutions to on-site problems.
More than 900 slopes with a variety of geometries were constructed and more than 23,000 soil nails were installed by the team.
Ainsworth said that the task of picking this year’s winner was “hard” and that the judges “had quite a heated debate on the three projects”.
Hinkley Point C, however, stood out for its exceptional “teamwork” and “collaboration”.
The judges were also impressed with “the enormity of the project under the time constraints given, the element of very responsive design, and the agility with which the team demonstrated to be able to act to challenging ground conditions on site, plus all the small practical innovations that have accumulated to make a big difference”, said Ainsworth.
