BGEN, a prominent player in the UK's energy transition, has clinched an impressive £84 million contract with GE Steam Power Systems for a crucial Electrical and Instrumentation project at Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset.
The significance of this win extends beyond mere numbers. Hinkley Point C, upon completion, is poised to contribute 7% of the UK's CO2-free energy over the next six decades. With an estimated capacity to power 6 million homes and reduce CO2 emissions by a staggering 9 million tons annually, the impact of this project on the country's energy landscape cannot be overstated.
GE Steam Power Systems will be furnishing the plant with its state-of-the-art Arabelle steam turbines, boasting a 2% increase in power output compared to traditional configurations, alongside an impressive reliability rate of 99.96%. These turbines, each capable of generating 1,770 MW of electrical power, mark a significant leap in power generation technology.
Commencing later this month and slated for completion by December 2027, BGEN's responsibilities encompass the design, supply, and installation of electrical and instrumentation packages for the Turbine Halls of Unit 1 and Unit 2 at the nuclear facility. Standing tall at 50 meters, these halls will house the colossal Arabelle turbines, generators, and other essential equipment.
BGEN's scope of work spans a wide array of tasks, from the installation of Isolated Phase Busducts (IPBs) to the meticulous termination and testing of cables. In the realm of instrumentation engineering, their duties entail everything from designing instrument frames to the final installation and testing of field instruments and associated equipment.
Zied Ben-Chabaane, Site Director at GE Steam Power System said:
