Sir James Dyson has announced that plans for Dyson to design and produce an electric car have been cancelled.

The firm’s founder told workers in an email that the electric car project was not commercially viable and shut down the automotive project with immediate effect on Thursday 10th October.

The company had invested more than £2bn in developing the electric vehicle, with half of that going towards battery technology. It is thought that the battery technology will still be worked on for other projects, but the car itself will not reach the market.

In total, 523 people (500 of which in the UK) were employed to work on the project.
