Celebrating 35 Remarkable Years with Millbank

This week, we celebrate an extraordinary milestone as Nigel French marks his 35th anniversary with Millbank. Starting with the company on March 19, 1990, at the age of 23, Nigel brought not only a sharp technical mind but also a white, highly polished XR2 and a Steven Seagal-esque look that was undeniably of the time!

Back then, the world was a very different place: fax machines ruled the office, desktop computers were unheard of, petrol was 42p a litre, and George Michael's Freedom topped the charts. It was also the year Nigel’s beloved Liverpool won the league (he's hoping for the same again this year too!), Margaret Thatcher resigned, Home Alone hit cinemas, and the Channel Tunnel was still under construction - one of the major projects Nigel contributed to in those early days.

With a background in Electrical & Instrument Engineering, Nigel quickly established himself as a key figure in the recruitment industry. His deep technical expertise in areas like Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls, PLCs, SCADA, and DCS helped Millbank become a trusted partner in delivering exceptional talent for complex engineering projects.

Over the years, Nigel has become known not just for his unrivalled industry knowledge but also for his integrity, honesty, and dedication to building meaningful relationships with clients and candidates alike. He has played a pivotal role in shaping Millbank’s success and reputation, helping us grow from a small team of five to a leading force in engineering recruitment.

Reflections from Friends and Colleagues

Sean, a fellow director at Millbank, shared, "Working with Nigel is a pleasure. It's uncanny how he can remember projects, key clients, and candidates he works with. This memory and understanding have definitely helped him in being the recruitment leader he has been over the years. I still remember the first day I started when Nigel sat me down to tell me what to expect working for Millbank and that I would ‘need to earn my stripes’ to become respected within the business. It was great advice and really helped me settle into Millbank (and ensured I worked my socks off to impress)."

Emma, our Key Account Manager who works alongside Nigel, added, "I love Nigel’s one-liners, especially, ‘It is what it is!’ (I say it all the time now). Also, he doesn’t miss a trick and knows everyone and remembers everything!"

Stuart, Business Manager who works closely with Nigel, also reflected, "Nigel is extremely unique in recruitment. He is an inspirational leader with outstanding man-management and mentoring skills. He is kind and has supported me greatly over my 13 years with the company. He always makes time for everybody, helps people, and gives good advice.
He has been consistently successful over his 35 years with Millbank, both individually and as a director. Nigel is a credit to the company and is extremely well respected by all clients and colleagues for his enormous wealth of knowledge within the Technical and Engineering sector."

Jo, Millbank's Group Business Support Manager and long-time friend, shared, "What can I say - we’ve shared some great times over the years, and while he may occasionally drive me mad, he never fails to make me smile. His old-school approach and legendary dislike of technology keep me on my toes, but that’s what makes him who he is. From the days of paperwork and fax machines to the digital world we work in now, Nigel has seen it all - whether he likes it or not! A fantastic colleague and a true Millbank legend - here’s to many more!"

A Wave of Congratulations from all over

The outpouring of well wishes from Nigel’s friends and colleagues highlights just how much of an impact he’s had on those around him. Words like “a true gentleman and leader” “phenomenal achievement” and “a pleasure to work with” have echoed throughout the messages. Many colleagues have reflected on the joy of working alongside Nigel, with one recalling fond memories of daily lifts to work while listening to Bruce Springsteen, and others expressing gratitude for his constant support, friendly face, and invaluable guidance over the years.

From heartfelt comments about his ability to make people smile and his legendary one-liners to appreciation for his commitment, patience, and wisdom - it's clear that Nigel is not just a colleague but a cherished mentor and friend to many.

Colleagues reminisced about key moments and projects, such as the days working on Sizewell B and the Channel Tunnel with BK, describing them as “great days.” Others expressed their admiration and appreciation with heartfelt messages, with one saying how honoured they feel to work alongside Nigel and how they look forward to many more years together. Another reflected on how amazing it was to be part of even a small chapter of Nigel’s 35-year journey.

Humorous and affectionate messages were also shared, with one colleague noting that managing 35 years with Mr. H is “an accomplishment if nothing else!” Another highlighted how Millbank is truly blessed to have someone with Nigel’s knowledge and expertise, while many echoed sentiments about his unwavering support, kindness, and ability to always be there when needed.

Old colleagues affectionately referred to him as “Frenchy,” acknowledging his well-deserved plaudits and recognising the impact he’s had on so many.

The overwhelming warmth and admiration from everyone at Millbank and beyond stand as a testament to the remarkable career and influence Nigel has had over the years. His knowledge, dedication, and leadership have left an indelible mark on the company and all those fortunate enough to work with him.
