BGEN, one of the UK’s leading engineering firms driving the energy transition, has successfully completed an ambitious two-year project for AstraZeneca. The project involved transforming a redundant pharmaceutical production facility into a cutting-edge ‘People Hub’ at AstraZeneca’s Macclesfield campus, aligning with the company's global sustainability objectives.

The newly unveiled ‘People Hub’ is designed to enhance employee collaboration and inclusion by bringing together teams from various functions under one roof. Built to comply with Pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), the hub includes GMP change facilities for 500 people, a café, and collaborative workspaces on the ground floor. The first floor is equipped with modern office areas, meeting rooms, touchdown spaces, and a new network data hub.

BGEN was appointed as the tier-one contractor for the project, taking on full responsibility for project management, design, construction, testing, and commissioning. The building, which previously accounted for 7.5% of the campus’s overall energy consumption, has been redesigned with sustainability at the forefront. The project focused on reducing energy use and reusing materials wherever possible.

Paul Mannion, Operations Manager at BGEN, expressed pride in the company’s role in the transformation, stating

This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering innovative engineering solutions and building strong client partnerships. We’re thrilled to support AstraZeneca’s sustainability goals and contribute to the improvement of their facilities.

The eco-friendly design of the People Hub includes features like recycled insulation, enhanced roof insulation with metal sheeting, upgraded argon-filled glass for heat retention, and solar shading on south-facing windows to maintain year-round comfort. Additionally, the installation of LED lighting, motion sensors, and water-saving plumbing fixtures ensures the building’s energy efficiency.

An AstraZeneca spokesperson highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two companies, noting,

BGEN is a trusted partner, and their work helps us not only improve the infrastructure on campus but also advance our long-term sustainability ambitions.

This project marks another successful collaboration between AstraZeneca and BGEN, demonstrating BGEN’s ability to manage complex projects while prioritising sustainable development. The People Hub stands as a testament to both companies' commitment to innovation and sustainability.
